Dwelling In Unity

Psalm 133-134

Unity - a word that is so powerful when fully understood  in the divine context.  The United States is founded on the ideal of states being united as "one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all."  Our focus should take us to a place where, as a people, we are united with the Lord Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and joined together in God's love.  Unity means to be of one accord.    What effect would it have on our country if all Christians were to truly be living transformed lives, united lives, that reflect the love of Christ?

Disunity is the biggest problem in our churches today.  A lack of unity brings with it strife, discord, and division.  There are Scriptural nuggets that contain the key to strengthening the cords of unity right here amongst ourselves, a strengthening that can be taken outside these walls.  We are told to go and tell all nations the good news.  Scripture is filled with wisdom that, when applied to our lives, can strengthen our ties to one another, the ties that are knitted together by the cord of love and the power of the risen Lord, as the Holy Spirit lives and works in our midst.

Psalm 51:6 in general demonstrates honest prayer.  It is our honest prayer for the Lord to teach us wisdom, wisdom that gets buried deep down in our hearts.  We all need the unity that comes from Christ, the unity that can shine the Lord's Love into the world.  Let's learn how to take the steps that are needed to draw closer, to be much tighter as one accord.  Let us nourish our hearts with the Bread of Life in Scripture.

Psalm 133 exalts the beauty and splendor of unity.  Unity is a work of art, a picture of grandeur when God's people dwell together in harmony.  When Aaron commenced his ministry as high priest, the oil of his anointing signified his total consecration to holy service.  This symbolic gesture evidenced a setting apart, a sanctification of Aaron, as he was to be wholly set apart.  We are sanctified for service in a way that wholly sets us qpart.  Without that, what do we have?  It is truly a beautiful picture of God's love when God's people dwell in unity with one another.

Communal unity with God will  make God's people richly fruitful.  A community sanctified for service, and richly fruitful,  is blessed by God.  God the Lord bestows His blessings, even forevermore.  It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to live in harmony.  We need lots and lots of help to understand how such a good and pleasant vision can be achieved.  Let's look at the wisdom that comes from the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:2-3.

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

Jesus is in us, and we are in Jesus.  It is the Holy Spirit, the living God, that brings us to complete unity with the Lord, that the world will know God the Father loves us as God the Father loved Jesus, our Lord in God in human form.   We are one with them.  We are anointed with Jesus, and we are given the same glory that God the Father gave Jesus.

How is there complete unity without reconciliation?  How is there reconciliation without  Jesus?  What is the necessary element for there to be unity?  Divine Love, Jesus' Love, the Holy Spirit.   For God is Love.  Jesus say to us in John 13:34-35,

"A new command I give you' Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Because we are connected, we are in unity with the Father through the Holy Spirit, and with one another.  Truly, it can only come from Divine Love.  Our love emanates directly from the source, the wellspring of the Spirit within.   We are in Christ, and Christ is in us.

What are some of the elements of unity?

1.  Humility - It guides are spirituall life into holiness.  Jesus the Holy One is the humble one. There is none holy but God.  Don't we want more of God?  What does it take to get more of God?  Humble yourself before the Lord.  He will lift you up.  Those I know who are humble have a quiet strength that can only come from the Lord deep within.

2.  Relationships - Unity comes through true strength in relationships.   Jesus guides us to love all of God's familiy in love.  In this way, we will desire to resolve the things that cause conflict.  Anger takes root and causes sin that takes the form of deepseated bitterness.   Don't let the sun go down while you are angry.  Be like-minded, sympathetic, compassionate and humble.  Don't repay evil with evil.  Why?  So that you may inherit a blessing.  Wisdom that is lived will bring unity.  Love all of God's family.

3.  Holy Spirit - Paul said that we live and move in Him, and we are His offspring.  Disunity is like a cancer in the body.  Satan, the thief, comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy.  Jesus came so that we may have life, and have it to the fullest.  Life to the fullest in a life of love , lived in harmony and unity, a life where we love one another enough to listen, really listen to one another, where the sun does not go down on our anger.

4.  Prayer - The Psalms aid us in seeking wisdom.  Jesus came in unity and oneness in reconciliation with humanity.  Jesus was sent because of infinite and divine liove, so we can be reconciled to God.  Let us come to our Lord in prayer with purity of heart.  Rejoice always.  Pray continually.  Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for us in Christ Jesus.  Seek guidance in prayer.  God is there if we quiet our hearts long enough and listen to what he has to say.

It is appropriate that we sing praises of thanks to our Jesus.  Much like the rightness that the Lord asks of us, when we set aside or differences and come together with the Lord in the Communion Supper.  All is right in our hearts when we are at  peace with the Lord.  Our hearts are filled with praise for our Lord.  Day and night, praise the Lord.  The ties of unity that come from the peace of His Presence bring us together in worship.   We owe it all to the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, the one who bestows us from on high.
