Police Profiling

I'm a potential victim of state police profiling and you might be too. I immigrated to this country but the victimization I'm subject to isn't because I'm an African. They are targeting one of my human failures. I'm not sure if I was born with this problem but about the time I was old enough to drive it became apparent.

Studies show that one in every twenty motorists is unable to drive plumb in the center of the highway lanes for long distances. It's not our fault. I never weave across the lines but I find that over distances like Clinton to Newark Airport I occasionally wander within the lane. Even the threat of large trucks rumbling alongside me doesn't cure it. I just can't help it.

I never thought I had this problem until someone pointed it out. Ask someone in your family to do a couple of random checks on your driving for the next month. You might be one of us - the lane accuracy impaired! We've suffered long enough. We need a support group.

And now shocking information has surfaced. The state police are pulling people like me over just because their profiling has revealed that drunken drivers also wander in the lanes. I have to suffer the indignity of a Breathalyzer test for something that I can't help. I wonder if I can find some outspoken pastors who are also drivers to take up my cause.

Reader, this is no joke. I'm not breaking the traffic laws. I just happen to innocently fit the same profile as the DWI criminals. I boldly say "Officer, thank you for caring enough to stop me. Have a nice day & keep up the good work!"

This whole profiling criticism of our police has gone too far. The highly successful anti-drug unit that works the hotels in Jersey hasn't make a single arrest recently. It's because the politicians who are looking for the votes of we - the victimized minorities - have hindered the very people who stand between the criminals and us. Enough already!

Here's worse news: A pile of arrests for illegal firearm and drug possession has been thrown out of court because the crooks were stopped "for the wrong reasons." I don't care how many times I'm pulled over for my lane wandering - I want drunk drivers caught! It's time to stop this whimpering and speak out to get our police back on the job.

The Bible says that authorities hold no terror for those who do right. Do you want to be free of fear from the cops? Then do what is right and he'll commend you. That even goes for people like me who have a heavy right foot! I've lived in a country where law enforcement was hobbled. It is a dangerous thing to allow the morale of our police to be lowered by pandering, vote -hungry politicians. The state police are not "too military". The real problem is that some of our state citizens are not respectful enough of the hard job we have given these troopers. Their job isn't primarily to keep you happy. It's to keep you safe.

And lastly, there's that gripe I keep hearing about policemen who are unfair or even crooked. Face it citizen, just as you are imperfect there will always be some judge, schoolteacher, policeman or pastor who doesn't walk a strait line. Do not allow a few sensational stories to color your view of law enforcement. On behalf of the 5% drivers who can't steer a straight line I say, "Mr. Policeman, profile us all you want - an extra ten minutes on our next trip won't bother us if we know that the drunks behind the wheel get pulled over too".
