When enough traditional values of the American people are declared "unconstitutional" by our federal courts, the constitution itself will need to be amended. If "under God" in the pledge of allegiance is unacceptable the day will come when the foundational clauses of our nation's religious life will be forfeited by the biased gavel of a secular humanist in a legal robe. The "In God We Trust" motto will be removed from our money. Opening prayers in the US Senate will be outlawed. The constitution says it was adopted in the "year of our Lord" 1787. A court might decide that phrase is harmful to the feelings of some Americans.
This new outrage hasn˙t happened in a vacuum. Readers over 50 have experienced court rulings that have stripped the right to life from our unborn children. You have seen the withdrawal of the privilege to pray in schools. You are living within an unfolding process. That's very dangerous. We can be so engrossed in the individual events that we loose sight of where the story is headed.
When a conservative judge resists attempts to get the Ten Commandments removed from his courtroom wall it creates a news story. Back and forth goes the debate. The code by which people have governed their lives is now unacceptable. This is a battle in a bigger war.
The courts have struck down the words "a moment of silence and prayer" at school functions. There are those who don˙t want our kids praying at school every day even if they do it wordlessly during a minute of silence at the start of the day. There's more than dislike of silence going on here. Whatever you do don't start a football game with a prayer!
Years ago the courts debated separation between church and state. Despite that it can be demonstrated that the original intent of those sentiments were to stop any particular church dominating the religious life of the USA, the judges moved in a direction that would have horrified the founding fathers. They never intended a separation between God and America. Ask yourself if America was founded with the principle of freedom OF religion or did the words say freedom FROM religion.
This process seeks to declare America independent of the God to whom its forebears prayed. They aspire to a state in which the president will not place a hand on the Bible and be sworn in with words that include God. If there's no God, there's only a small problem with what's happening. If God is distant and uninvolved with earth˙s peoples, at worst our actions might annoy Him. Ah, but if God is the highly interactive, caring God of the Bible we are making decisions that carry eternal consequences.
One of the Old Testament commandments was not to remove the ancient boundary stones. At first you skim over the words. You feel they have no reference to modern life. Then it hits you. There are boundaries that have been established by our forbears. They were written as the fruit of experience. America has a long religious history. Boundary stones have been laid down.
The final issue, for me, is spiritual rebellion. Some reckless people are using our courts to challenge the long standing national concept: "In submission to Almighty God". It starts when you disregard His laws and it multiplies when your peers join you to do the same. It declines when you yield your heart to Him. Surrender today.
