Good news: we can approve a law that will spend millions on a medical cure for the damage caused by Russian Roulette. Would you agree to that? Why ever not?! You ought to feel compassion for those poor souls who take a bullet to their brain even though that's not what they really wanted. I'm not exaggerating. People don't play this dangerous game with a desire that a round be in the chamber the next time they place the revolver to their head. You should feel sorry for those who don't hear the click for which they were hoping.
OK so you don't like the above suggestion of medical treatment. I suppose you have a better idea. Maybe you join those who would like to see the money spent on teaching kids that it would be better not to play the game at all. I suppose there ought to be a word of warning to young minds but if you were a competent educator you'd want to cover other aspects of the subject. For example we can give kids training on how to spin the revolver chambers in such a way as to minimize the possibility of a gunshot. I see you're shaking your head in disapproval of my idea. Listen, thrill seekers are going to play the game. We should be spending most of our efforts on making the game as safe as possible. Still not convinced I see.
Actually you are right. There are things that shouldn't be part of a gamble. The sacredness of human life is too precious to be part of a thrill game involving sweaty fingers on a trigger. In fact there is no thrill in the world big enough to be subservient to respect for human life. Not even sexual excitement with all its accompanying hormonal persuasion, should cheapen the value of the gift of life.
In 2002 we in New Jersey have rediscovered a cheap, 100% reliable, preventative for A.I.D.S. and unwanted pregnancies. Its been there all along. We started the year by passing a law that this cure should be given first place in sex education at our schools. If you haven't guessed, its called abstinence. The main reason why we haven't afforded it the place of primary importance until now is that our education system was steeped in secular humanism. As such it was very shy of anything that comes from the Bible. We taught abstinence as just one of the ways to avoid undesired sexual consequences. Too few teachers gave it the weight it deserved.
Its been long in arriving. In the meanwhile we have seen thousands of young lives shattered by pinning false hopes on the pill or the condom. Any educator who has failed to teach that sexuality and morality are intertwined has betrayed their trust.
The time has come to reinforce the message behind the new sex-ed laws. Read the terms of the law yourself. Rejoice over this moral victory. Send a note to school today applauding the legislation. Ask your child's teacher to be well versed in its requirements.
We were created for relationships. God intended you to know Him, to lovingly raise the children that came from your body and to reach out the hand of charity to your neighbor. Sexuality was part of God's plan for life-long commitment between a man and woman. It is both the constant reaffirming and the loving expression of that covenant. For this reason it can be simply stated: "true love waits!"
